Partners for Conservation in the Colombian Amazon is an interagency cooperation initiative whose purpose is to contribute to the conservation of biological and cultural diversity of the Colombian Amazon. We promote scientific formation, knowledge generation, and the building of collaborative networks. To this aim we offer courses and research fellowships, workshops, professional development opportunities, and experiences for capacity building and research skills. The initiative also gives the associated institutions opportunities for interaction and exchange of knowledge.
Our Mission and Vision
Our mission is to contribute to the conservation of biological and cultural diversity of the Colombian Amazon using as main tool for education. We believe that only by promoting the construction of scientific knowledge, strengthening the professional skills of future actors in the region, and involving civil society can we contribute to the formulation of management actions and conservation reported for this biome.
Our vision is that by 2015, Partners for Conservation in the Colombian Amazon will be a strong institutional alliance providing opportunities for strengthening the educational processes focused on the conservation of biodiversity in the Colombian Amazon.
Improve capacity of Colombian institutions to support biodiversity conservation and contribute to maintenance of the Andean Amazon Biome.
- Strengthen capacity of Colombian higher education to provide high quality professional training relevant to biodiversity conservation and resource management in the Andean Amazon.
- Strengthen the capacity of faculty and students at higher education institutions in Colombia to conduct and disseminate applied research relevant to biodiversity conservation and resource management.
- Strengthen the capacity of Colombian universities to collaborate with international scientists, with other universities, with NGOs, and with government institutions.
The initiative is led by Florida International University, the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, the Universidad de la Amazonia, and the Universidad Nacional sede Amazonia. We invite interested individuals, academic institutions, private sector organizations, government and civil society actors to join forces to meet current and future conservation challenges facing this region of Colombia.
Florida International University
Florida International University (FIU) is located in Miami, Florida, United States of America. It is one of the 25 largest universities in the country and has approximately 54,000 students. FIU is the largest Hispanic serving institution in the United States and ranks number 1 in the nation in awarding bachelor’s and master’s degrees to Hispanic students. FIU has extensive experience in the development of educational programs and research related to tropical ecology and biodiversity conservation.
Pontificia Universidad Javeriana
The Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (PUJ), located in Bogotá, DC, Colombia, was founded by the Compañia de Jesus in 1623. It is a Catholic university recognized by the Colombian government, which aims to serve the human community by seeking to establish a more civilized, more educated and more just society. PUJ promotes the integral development of people, human values, development through the transmission of science and culture. The university contributes to development, guidance, constructive criticism and transformation of society.
Universidad de la Amazonia
The Universidad de la Amazonia, located in Florencia, Caqueta, Colombia, is a public state institution of higher education whose specific goal is to contribute to national development, especially in the Amazon region. The university is committed to the integral formation of human capital to meet the challenges of the third millennium through quality education at the undergraduate and graduate level that encourages a scientific foundation, the development of research skills, and the involvement of students and faculty in solving regional and national issues.
Universidad Nacional Sede Amazonia
The Universidad Nacional de Colombia Sede Amazonia is located in Leticia, Amazonas, Colombia. This institution is committed to the production, projection, and systematization of knowledge about and from the Amazon region in the face of current and future liabilities related to the region’s geostrategic and environmental importance. Its mission is to produce and disseminate knowledge about the Colombian Amazon, Panamazonia and Andean-Amazon-Orinoco and Amazon regions, through high quality and relevant research. The university helpings to solve national and regional problems and meets needs taking into account local, national and international contexts.
